Biography
Having completed his undergraduate medical training at St. Bartholomew’s and The Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry, his specialist training in Spinal surgery took place at a number of the UK’s esteemed spinal surgery units including Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, Kings’ College Hospital London and University Hospital Southampton. He completed his Fellowship training in complex paediatric and adult spinal surgery at The John Radcliffe Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford, UK.
Stephen was appointed as Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon to University Hospital Southampton in 2012. Initially his practice encompassed all aspects of paediatric and adult complex spine surgery, including deformity, degenerative spine, spinal oncology and spinal trauma. Having helped to establish a regional referral service for complex adult spinal deformity, Stephen made a considered decision to focus his practice entirely on adult spine to permit the continued development and enhancement of the complex adult spinal surgical service with a regional referral base for South Central England. As well as maintaining a busy elective service in a specialist teaching hospital, Stephen also participates in the regional on call service for spinal emergencies covering a population of approximately 4 million. His private practice is based at BMI Sarum Road in Winchester and Wessex Nuffield Hospitals.
Stephen is Chairman of the Wessex Spinal Network. Aside from his clinical and managerial responsibilities he enjoys training Clinical Fellows. His academic and research interests are currently focused on the challenges encountered in complex adult spine surgery, particularly pseudarthrosis and rod failure in long fusion constructs.
